In 2000, Taiwan experienced a political shift as its long-standing one-party system ended and democratic elections led to a new government. A book that explored the concept of national identity through detailed reporting became popular in Japan and Taiwan but also stirred controversy by addressing sensitive issues, leading to backlash from Chinese unification supporters and the author being barred from entering the country. By 2008, Taiwan had returned to KMT rule. With a focus on immediate economic gains, concerns arose about the erosion of national identity and the increasing influence of mainland Chinese culture. Questions about the nature of a nation and the meaning of nationalism emerged from these developments.
