In a futuristic Japan of 2003, robots are a common presence in a technologically advanced society. Tobio, a robot created by Dr. Tenma to resemble his deceased son, is abandoned when it becomes clear he is not a perfect replica. He is later saved by Professor Ochanomizu, who advocates for robot rights. Rechristened Astro Boy, the robot is tasked with protecting Japan and the world from various dangers. Equipped with seven special abilities and immense power, he strives to demonstrate the positive potential of robots.
