A wealthy young man named Colin meets the woman he loves, Chloe, at a party celebrating a friend's dog's birthday. He declares his engagement to her in front of his friends Chick and Alyssum, who cannot get married themselves because Chick has spent all his money on items related to the philosopher Paltre. As Colin's wealth decreases, Chloe is diagnosed with a water lily growing in her lungs and becomes confined to bed.
