An 11-year-old girl moves in with her uncle, who operates a local animal hospital, after her mother is hospitalized. Though she fears animals, she attempts to assist. A Chihuahua misbehaves when she approaches, and the cats hiss at her. Seeking calm, she meets a boy and his dog, which shifts her fear into a wish to learn. As she works to understand the animals, they grow more at ease. Amid challenges like her mother’s illness and school difficulties, she finds comfort and support from animals, friends, and caring adults. Each new animal becomes a potential friend.
