In July 1943, during the Pacific War, a group of Japanese soldiers was withdrawing from a remote island in the North Pacific when their final transport vessel was damaged and began to flood. To lighten the boat, two wounded men were forced to return to the island. Lieutenant Matsumoto, the ship's captain, chose to jump back into the sea rather than face a firing squad for insubordination. He was discovered 16 years later in a frozen cave on the island and successfully revived using modern medical techniques. Struggling to find purpose in a changed Japan, Matsumoto confronts societal issues and is assigned as a teacher at a troubled junior high school in Chiba, run by the Matsumoto Group. The school faces challenges with graffiti, vandalism, and a group of influential delinquent students known as the "God's Hands." Matsumoto is tasked with reforming a small group of students called "Z," through unconventional educational methods.
