In the year 1985, a woman gives birth to twins, one of them turns out to be a reincarnation of the great Shaman, Asakura Hao, who injures his family and escapes with a guardian ghost. 13 years later, Shaman Asakura Yoh, the other twin, who shows his power to Manta, a normal high school student who was just passing through the graveyard. Later, in an attempt to expose Yoh's secret, Manta gets in trouble with delinquent Ryu who in the process breaks the grave of the late samurai Amidamaru. After seeing Manta's injuries, Yoh avenges him by defeating Ryu using the soul of Amidamaru to possess him. In the aftermath, Yoh finally befriends Manta and Amidamaru. Yoh, then, requests Amidamaru to be his partner. Though Amidamaru is reluctant at first but eventually agrees when Yoh reveals he managed to get his sword, Harusame, repaired, thanks to the spirit of his friend Mosuke. Meanwhile, we get a glimpse of another Shaman with a Spirit/Ghost looking at Yoh.
