Under public pressure, the king convenes the Etats-Generaux for the first time in several centuries. The gravely ill, seven-year-old Crown Prince Joseph goes with Oscar on a horse ride despite his frail condition due to his great admiration for her. He vows with all his heart to someday become the King. Alain goes back to Company B to see the Etats-Generaux. Fersen returns to Sweden. At the Etats-Generaux's opening ceremony, no one claps for Marie Antoinette. A month of difficult debate between the commoner delegates and nobles pass.
