In the 198th year of the Solar Era in Tokyo, specialized fire brigades combat spontaneous human combustion, a phenomenon that transforms people into burning entities known as "Infernals." Initially, these individuals are first-generation cases, but later generations can control fire while maintaining their human form. Shinra Kusakabe, a young man with the ability to set his feet on fire at will, becomes part of the Special Fire Force Company 8, a unit composed of other flame users tasked with extinguishing Infernals. As a group emerges responsible for creating Infernals, Shinra starts to uncover the truth about a mysterious fire that killed his family twelve years prior.
