Gladiator arenas have existed in specific regions of Japan since the Edo period. In these venues, wealthy businesspeople and merchants employ fighters to compete in no-holds-barred combat, with all rewards going to the victor. A combatant known as "Ashura" enters these contests and overwhelms his rivals.
