Three orbital elevators, each managed by the Union, the Human Reformist Alliance, and the AEU, supply this power. Tensions arise as not all nations benefit equally, resulting in global conflict. A non-profit military group named Celestial Being emerges, aiming to end all war by deploying advanced mobile suits known as Gundams. The organization's Gundam pilots—Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism, and Tieria Erde—become involved in battles between the three major powers and other factions.
