In 2005, alien creatures known as Zonders surface from underground and attack Tokyo. The Gutsy Geoid Guard, a covert organization, defends the city using the powerful robot GaoGaiGar. Guy Shishio, the robot's pilot, was nearly killed two years earlier when Zonders crashed on Earth. He survived after being rescued by Galeon, a robotic lion that pulled him from a burning spacecraft. His father, Leo, used Galeon’s technology to reconstruct Guy as a cyborg, preparing him for the Zonders’ return. GaoGaiGar is built around Galeon’s core and is supported by a team of transformable robots. Guy is assisted by Mamoru, a boy who can purify the Zonders’ cores and appears to have a link to Galeon.
