Nalan Yanran was the former fiancee to Xiao Yan but the engagement was called off after he had lost his cultivation. She is a cold person to people she does not know the strength of and people who are weaker than her, but will respect people who are stronger than her.

Later on in the story she made a promise to him about a battle in three years in order determine whether Xiao Yan would officially cancel the engagement or not, Xiao Yan showed up as Yan Xiao and showed his battle prowess and made her fall for him before revealing himself to be the victor and making her regret her actions from the past.
