This prequel to *7 Seas, 7 Skies* spans from 1581 to 1586, with glimpses into earlier years. It centers on Tyrian Persimmon, the son of a Spanish mother and an Englishman, in a time of conflict between the two nations. Tyrian favors Spain, which causes tension with his father, who believes Tyrian is not his biological child and physically abuses him. His mother's lover is revealed to be a Spanish spy and leaves the country. Tyrian aspires to join the navy and reunite with Geraldo. By age 19, he starts climbing the ranks of the English navy through forceful means.
