A region known as Oriens is divided into four nations, each associated with a symbol and a crystal that provides distinct abilities. The Suzaku Fiefdom of Rubrum holds the Suzaku Crystal, granting power over magic; the Milites Empire controls the Byakko Crystal, which bestows weapon-related abilities; the Lorican Alliance is linked to the Genbu Crystal, offering shield-based powers; and the Kingdom of Concordia possesses the Sōryū Crystal, tied to dragon abilities. These crystals designate individuals as l'Cie, marked with a symbol and assigned a task, though they gradually lose their memories. A peace agreement exists among the four nations, but it is broken when Cid Aulstyne leads a military campaign against them. After conquering Lorica, the Milites Empire turns its attention to Concordia and Rubrum. The Suzaku Crystal, which had protected Rubrum, unexpectedly shatters, leaving the nation vulnerable and forcing it to surrender. Despite this, students from Class Zero retain their crystal-imbued powers and resist the invasion.
