In 972 A.D., Kyoto, the capital of ancient Japan, faces corruption, famine, and disease as selfish samurai and onmyoji pursue political power. The Imperial Court sends Minamoto no Raiko, a renowned archer, to retrieve a legendary gem believed to possess world-saving power. Raiko becomes ill, so his youngest sister, Hikaru, secretly takes his place on the journey. Along the way, she meets various individuals and experiences numerous adventures in her quest for the gem.
