Richard heads home on a scheduled 7:30 train where he falls asleep but wakes up just in time to get off at the right stop. He encounters a friend, Sonia Shadowly, while walking home and the two go to Tōto Bay Bridge. Richard finds a harmless pen in Sonia’s car and keeps it for himself. They return two hours later to find Sonia's roommate, Vicky Bowen, stabbed to death in her condo. Conan suspects Sonia and suggests that Richard missed his stop on the train and got off at 8:30 instead, breaking Sonia's alibi. Angry that he was used for criminal purposes, Richard heads to confront Sonia at her residence but knocks himself out on a table. Conan uses the chance to impersonate him and reveal that Sonia is indeed the murderer. When Vicki was still alive, a mail courier visited her to sign for a package that was dropped off at 8:00. Vicki kept the pen and moments later, Sonia came and stabbed her to death, the ballpoint pen falling beside her. Believing the pen was Vicki's, Sonia took it to dispose later, unbeknownst to her that the mail courier’s fingerprints was on the pen, which is now in Richard‘s possession.
