After graduating from Yoyogi Animation Academy, he joined [Gainax](https://anilist.co/studio/6/). He debuted as an in-betweener in [Neon Genesis Evangelion](https://anilist.co/anime/30/), as a key animator on [Berserk](https://anilist.co/anime/33/), and as an animation director on [Mahoromatic](https://anilist.co/anime/276/). In 2007, he served as a character designer for the first time on [Kiss Dum: Engage Planet](https://anilist.co/anime/2106/). He was a key staff member at Gainax for a long time, but left in 2011 when [Hiroyuki Imaishi](https://anilist.co/staff/97349/) and others established the anime production company Trigger. There he was given the job of handling the character designs for [Kill la Kill](https://anilist.co/anime/18679/), the first TV series produced by the newly-found studio.
