Akira Nikaido is a high school student with an ordinary, laid-back life. His routine changes when he encounters Shirogane, a mysterious man who claims they share a destined connection. Akira is skeptical and dismissive at first. Later, when his friend Aya asks for help retrieving something from the school at night, Akira agrees and is attacked by a shadow creature. Shirogane intervenes, explaining that the boundary between the human world and the shadow world is breaking down. He urges Akira to become a "shin," a being from the shadow world, to help restore balance. The anime version includes shonen-ai elements not found in the manga.
