Apr 8, 2008Easygoing student Akira Nikaido encounters Shirogane, a shadowless stranger claiming to be a shadow, who vanishes after their meeting. Later, Akira and friend Kengo rescue child Haruka from bullies at an arcade, attracting the attention of school prefect Aya. She demands they accompany her to school to retrieve a forgotten dragon plushie. On the way back, they are attacked by shadow monsters called kokuchi. Aya is injured when her plushie is destroyed, and Akira’s attempt to fight back fails as his sword breaks. Shirogane reappears, creating a barrier to protect them. Akira runs through the barrier, loses his shadow, and faces death. Shirogane offers a deal: Akira becomes a Shin with special powers in exchange for survival. The next morning, Akira learns he cannot return to being human and is invisible to others. Shirogane vanishes, leaving Akira confused but alive.

They retreat to Bar Still, where the blind Master, possessing strong psychic abilities, heals them. The Master explains the Doppler item, which allows Akira to regain human form independently, ending Shirogane's constant advances.

Despite her strength, Aya loses to her senpai, who promises Iai training with real swords the next day. Hiroki becomes frustrated by street corruption, encountering ungrateful students and prostitutes. News breaks of a Sword-Killer injuring people Hiroki saw previously. When Hiroki fails to meet Aya, Akira, and Kengo, Mayu is attacked by the killer for her attire. Aya intervenes, deflecting a katana strike, and Akira and Kengo arrive to help. The killer is revealed to be Hiroki. Akira and Kengo defeat the Kokuchi, prompting Aya to awaken her powers to finish them. Shirogane advises Akira to recruit comrades, leading him to accept Aya while dismissing Kengo’s request.

May 13, 2008At Bar Still, Kengo confronts Akira and Aya about his exclusion from the group, citing his perceived uselessness in combat. A blue-haired man named Nanaya arrives with a subordinate, Ruru, who explains that Shirogane maintains balance between the Light and Shadow worlds. Nanaya leaves a Kokuchi-possessed Kengo to attack Akira. After Akira frees Kengo, he initially refuses to involve him further to protect him. However, Kengo insists on joining. Akira retrieves an Al Cesta glove from Shirogane’s coat, officially accepting Kengo as a comrade.
