A martial artist named Ranma and his father, Genma, undergo a transformation after encountering a cursed spring in China. Ranma changes into a girl when exposed to cold water, while Genma turns into a panda. Their altered states create complications at the Tendou dojo, where Soun Tendo plans to introduce one of his daughters to Ranma as his fiancée. The engagement was arranged by Genma and Soun, but neither Ranma nor the chosen daughter, Akane, are pleased with the arrangement. The situation becomes further complicated by Ranma's shifting gender, emotional conflicts, and martial arts confrontations.
