Akiko confirms his death, but he hasn't been repeating the same day; he has been home for three days. He realizes whose shadow he has been seeing, and that he must go. He thanks her for having him home again this year, and they bid each other goodbye. An elderly Akiko informs her grown daughter that her father had just left for the year, but only she could see him.
