Conan prevents an accident involving a out-of-control car with no working breaks. Someone poked holes in the brake hose, and the police investigate the incident as an attempted murder. The driver Hosoo was on his way to deliver a valuable double-sided mask to Ichikawa Ebizo, who is rehearsing at the kabuki theater. Ebizo plans to use the mask at next month's performance of "Nanatsu Men." The chairman Matsubara takes the mask from Hosoo and keeps it in a locker during rehearsal, but the next morning, they discover the mask has been stolen. Hosoo's secretary Takahashi is also found dead inside a car. In the passenger seat is an empty duralumin case that contained the mask. Conan investigates the rehearsal space and determines it is very likely the thief is involved in the play, and Ebizo is moved by Conan's sharp detective skills. At the inn, they encounter writers Nakama and Koyanagi who have come to gather information on the incident as well. While searching inside a dark storehouse, Heiji suffers a cut on his right arm, Kogoro suffers one on the back of his hand, and Koyanagi suffers one on her cheek. Conan and the others leave the hotel after eating, but Conan notices that Sakurako Yonehara is asking for a key to Kyona's room, where she was supposed to wake up. The two women are frightened, but then the alien announces, "We are extraterrestrials" while tapping its throat, and asks them to take a picture of him and publicize it. Amused by this proposition, the two women cheerfully agree to this and pose for a picture and even a video clip with Nakashima's smartphone. Suddenly, they hear a man yelling in fear, "It's an alien!", and then the body of a man comes tumbling down the stairs from above.
