Following a Hollow attack, Rangiku shields a child from an Arrancar singing a strange melody. Ikkaku defeats the enemy, but the group decides to delay sending the boy, Shouta Toyokawa, to the Soul Society for interrogation. Shouta insists on completing a task in the real world before departing, though he refuses to specify what it entails. Rangiku persuades Hitsugaya to allow a one-day wait. That night, Shouta tries to steal Rangiku's Zanpakutou to find a specific person, but she catches him. Before Rangiku can demand more details, the Arrancar Ikkaku had previously killed reappears, escalating the situation.
