Hagino reports to her Master Commander Shivariel, addressed as Ekaril, that a malfunction in Blue's Emiru Force Drive caused a five-year communication blackout. She attributes the Kamioki Island incident, which killed a crew member, the Arume landing party, and all islanders except Mari, to this failure. Azanael, whose lover Onomil died in the event, tries to attack Hagino but is stopped. Meanwhile, at school, Mari discusses her writing with Michiko. Upperclassman Akane Kawashima treats them to lunch, sharing her cooking ambitions and urging Mari to open up to Hagino. Thugs then kidnap Mari just as Shivariel sends a probe to retrieve her. Hagino destroys the probe, leading Mari to tearfully embrace her.
