Alone in her apartment, Candy reflects on Alistear’s death and considers Albert’s perspective. Neil arrives to propose, ignoring her six-year history of resentment since she joined his household in 1910. Mrs. Leagan opposes the union, but Eliza manipulates her mother and great-aunt Elroy by claiming Neil will enlist for war like Alistear, arguing an Ardley-Leagan marriage benefits the family. A carriage summons Candy to the Ardley mansion, where she is immediately pressured to marry Neil under Grandfather William’s supposed orders. Claiming William is absent, Candy investigates his Chicago bank, finding only George. He transports her to Lakewood to meet the mysterious benefactor. When Candy hesitates, Grandfather William turns his chair to examine her closely.
