Students across town gather to play the popular card game Vanguard. Timid Aichi Sendou possesses the rare Blaster Blade card, attracting the attention of Katsumi Morikawa, who seeks revenge on Toshiki Kai. After Morikawa and Yuuta Izaki steal the card, Aichi discovers it was lost in a bet against Kai. The two boys then duel with Blaster Blade as the prize. Kai initially returns the card to help complete Aichi's deck. During the match, Kai instructs Aichi on the game's rules. Aichi realizes he previously summoned Kai's ace, Blaster Blade, which Kai gave him long ago, revealing that this gift inspired Aichi to start playing Vanguard.
