First-year student Sumire Hanano, rejected by her boyfriend on the first day of school, notices Taichi when the karuta club seeks recruits. Twenty first-years, including Sumire, apply, though most lack experience and feel daunted by the game's demands. Chihaya observes that members hold varying priorities for the club. Her primary goal is strengthening the team so Taichi reaches Class A and she trains new members to win the national high school tournament in both team and individual categories across all classes. Sumire follows Taichi as he attends training sessions at the Shiranami society.
