Eighteen-year-old student Hideki Motosuwa struggles with financial hardship, prep school attendance, and a lack of romantic experience. His primary aspiration involves attending college and acquiring a cute Persocom companion for internet browsing. While walking outside one evening, he discovers a discarded Persocom unit in the trash. Upon activating the device, he names her Chi, a moniker derived from her only utterance. Hideki attempts to conceal her existence from his neighbor Hiromu Shinbo, who owns a mini-Persocom named Sumomo, as well as from his landlady, Ms. Hibiya. Despite these concealment efforts, he ultimately chooses to retain Chi, a decision that brings her evident happiness. This narrative establishes the initial circumstances surrounding Hideki's new cohabitant and his personal motivations.
