Doctor Jukai previously served Lord Shiba, creating prosthetics and crucifying enemies until his loved one died, prompting him to flee to foreigners who taught him his craft. He rescued an abandoned infant from Lord Daigo Kagemitsu, naming him Hyakkimaru and fitting him with artificial limbs. After Hyakkimaru defeated the demon Kamaitachi and regained his right leg, Jukai deduced demons were stealing his body parts. Before Hyakkimaru departed to travel alone, Jukai installed swords into his prosthetic arms. In the present, Hyakkimaru returns to Dororo and Houshi after slaying a demon, now seemingly possessing the ability to feel pain.
