Reiji Ozora is a high school student lacking motivation until friend Maiko Yukino introduces him to the virtual reality game Dragon Drive. This new interest gives him purpose, but his enthusiasm wanes when he receives a dragon so weak it fails to register in the system. He names this creature Chibi. Later, Reiji is compelled to engage in a battle against Daisuke Hagiwara, a boy who is infatuated with Maiko. During this confrontation, Reiji realizes that Chibi possesses unexpected abilities and depth that are not immediately apparent. The encounter reveals that the seemingly useless dragon holds significant potential, challenging Reiji's initial perceptions and forcing him to reconsider his approach to the game and his own capabilities within this digital world.
