Subsequently, both fleets initiate combat with extreme caution, as each side suspects the other of employing traps or deceptive tactics during the engagement.

Ivan Konev dies when his strike craft is destroyed by cruiser fire. Yang recognizes that the conflict has shifted to a test of endurance due to Reinhard’s continuous reforms. The Alliance fleet lures the enemy vanguard into an asteroid field, isolating Reinhard from his main force. Müller’s fleet returns first to rescue the Brunhilde and shield it from the surrounding Alliance ships.

Ceasefire declared as Yang's fleet faces Heinessen's orders and Alliance surrender.
Dec 20, 1991Yang's fleet approaches the Brunhilde's firing range when Heinessen announces a ceasefire. During the Battle of Vermillion, Hildegard persuaded the Mittermeyer fleet to capture Heinessen, anticipating that Reinhard would have died before other fleets arrived. She also convinced Reuenthal to join the attack on Heinessen, despite her wariness of his ambitions. Trüniht intends to surrender, while other Alliance government members prefer to fight to the death. Armed Earth Cult members rescue Trüniht during the meeting. The Alliance's surrender divides Yang's staff; some wish to ignore orders and kill Reinhard, while others accept the ceasefire. It is decided that part of Yang's staff will escape with Admiral Merkatz to become pirates.

Sieg Kaiser Declares Long Live the Emperor Amidst Political Transition
Dec 27, 1991Yang boards the Brunhilde to meet Reinhard, declining the Imperial Fleet Admiral role to retire quietly. The two discuss government and philosophy while the Treaty of Barlat ends hostilities, sparking unrest as blame shifts to former Chairman Trüniht. Admiral Lennenkanpt becomes Imperial consul of Heinessen. Meanwhile, Julian, Mashengo, and Boris Konev prepare for an Earth visit. On June 20, 799 S.C. / 490 I.C., the regent signs a declaration abdicating the young Empress’s throne to Reinhard. This marks the start of the New Empire and year 1 of the New Imperial Calendar (N.I.C.).
