While traveling to Megalopolis Station, Tetsuro and his mother are ambushed by Count Mecha, resulting in his mother's death. Tetsuro is then saved by a mysterious woman who resembles his deceased parent. She invites him to travel aboard the Galaxy Express 999. Driven by grief and a desire for immortality, the young boy accepts the offer, seeking to obtain a mechanical body. This encounter marks the beginning of his journey across the galaxy, as he leaves his tragic past behind to pursue a new existence through technology, guided by the enigmatic conductor and the legendary train.
