Prompted by friend Risa Shiramine, Kaede Honjō enters the virtual reality MMORPG NewWorld Online. To avoid damage, she creates the avatar Maple, allocating all skill points to defense. This strategy results in low speed and weak attacks, but high defense grants new abilities and extra points when hit. After meeting Kuromu the shielder and Iz the crafter, Maple enters a dungeon to fight the Poison Dragon. Using potions provided by Kuromu, she endures the dragon's toxic assaults until she develops complete poison immunity. She then defeats the creature by eating it, acquiring the Poison Dragon's abilities and a unique set of equipment.
