Izumi, a kind but extremely unlucky high school student, meets his girlfriend Shikimori on his first day of the second year. Shikimori possesses a near-supernatural ability to protect him from harm. They reunite with friends Shu Inuzuka, Kyo Nekozaki, and Yui Hachimitsu, discovering they share a class. Classmates warn Izumi that his bad luck might endanger Shikimori, but she overhears this. Later, at a bowling alley, Nekozaki and Hachimitsu advise Shikimori, a bowling expert, to play loosely to appear cuter. However, Izumi’s encouragement leads her to achieve a perfect game. On the walk home, Izumi feels inadequate for relying on her protection. As a large sign nearly crushes him, Shikimori deflects it and asks him to stay by her side.

During the class sports festival, Izumi suffers a head injury from a stray ball and receives care from Shikimori in the nurse's office. Later, Shikimori’s volleyball team faces defeat until a recovered Izumi cheers her on from the stands, enabling her and Nekozaki to secure a win. While Shikimori and Nekozaki gain popularity among female students, Izumi steps back. Inuzuka protects Izumi from another stray ball, prompting Izumi to apologize closely, which enrages Shikimori. She saves him from falling down the stairs and scolds him for his proximity to Inuzuka and for walking home alone. Izumi clarifies there is no romance with Inuzuka, explaining he waited for Shikimori because he missed her. Delighted by his words, Shikimori agrees to walk home with him.

However, his fantasies are quickly interrupted when he discovers the actual movie selection Shikimori-san has decided upon for their date.
