Occult detective investigates livestock deaths and a boy with a lifestone pendant in rural village

Kohachi Inugami, an occult detective from Tokyo, arrives in a rural village to investigate rotting livestock corpses. He meets Kabane Kusaka, a dirty boy nicknamed Dorotabo who is scorned by inn staff. Inugami notes that animals lose organs during full moons and identifies Kabane’s pendant as a lifestone, proving he is not abandoned. After Yataro steals the necklace, Kabane transforms into a ghoul, frightening Yataro away. Inugami reveals Kabane is a hanyo, a human-ghoul hybrid, while he himself is a bakedanuki. The lifestone previously prevented transformation. Kabane kills a deer ghoul culprit. Inugami then shoots Kabane, claiming his true mission was to kill him. Kabane survives, waking up in Tokyo at Inugami’s detective agency.

Inugami introduces himself as the Kemonoist and Kabane meets Shiki and Akira

Inugami reintroduces himself as the Kemonoist, a mediator for Kemono and human coexistence. Kabane meets Shiki Tademaru, a part-Arachne hanyo, and Akira, a Snow Kemono descendant. They tackle a sanshichu infestation threatening a mother, child, and hazmat officer. The bugs swarm over stolen expensive shoes, feeding on guilt. Shiki’s spider thread fails, so Kabane intervenes. As a part-immortal-ghoul, Kabane feels no pain, though Inugami suspects his inn-keeper suppressed his fear and revulsion. The infestation ends when the family reunites. Kabane wonders about having parents, inspired by Inugami. He hopes Shiki’s parents are alive. Inugami reports to a mysterious woman about Kabane’s arrival and lifestone, questioning if he is a threat or hope.

Inugami directs Kabane, Shiki, and Akira to meet Superintendent Yokō Inari, a kitsune officer collaborating with the detective agency. After giving Kabane a charm, they are led by Kon to Inari, who tricks Kabane into surrendering his lifestone and decapitates him. Kon attacks Shiki and Akira, burning the building when her disguise fails, while revealing that staff members are mindless puppets under Inari’s influence. Shiki retrieves Kabane’s head from Kon using his threads, allowing Kabane to bite her shoulder and knock her out. Kabane regrows his body, and Shiki officially accepts him as a friend. They reunite with Inugami, who anticipated these events. Inari’s plan to mass-produce lifestones fails because Inugami’s illusion replaced the stone with a tanuki charm, causing Inari to kill her driver in anger. Later, Inugami subdues Kon, who attempts to steal the head, before a human smelling of Kemono arrives.

Kabane accepts a mission to retrieve a nekomata while Akira investigates frog Kemono deaths.

Inugami assigns Kon a mission to capture a nekomata named Mao, promising Kabane’s head as payment. The target, Yoruno, was seduced by Mao and now collects rats, having accepted his transformation into a human-faced cat. Motivated by Akira’s comments on love, Kabane takes the job to learn about his parents, enchanting an orange to mimic the reward. Kabane reflects on love as light and buys gifts, inspiring Akira to work harder. Akira joins Inugami on a mission to the Shibuya River dam site, where workers are dying from frog Kemono attacks. During the journey, Akira reveals he seeks his twin brother after leaving a female-dominated village in Aomori. When the frog Kemono strike, Akira uses a powerful ice burst to freeze the tunnel and defeat the threat.

Shiki recalls childhood trauma and is paralyzed by Kanonba mosquitoes until Akira and Kabane arrive. Mihai reveals the poison’s mechanism, but Shiki breaks free by trapping Erika with sweat webs. Reika, the eldest sister, kills her siblings and overpowers the group. Kabane, realizing his human strength is insufficient, channels his desire to protect Akira and Shiki to activate his kemono power, ripping Reika’s arms off. Nobimaru from Inari’s agency appears, incinerating the Kanonbas. He privately informs Kabane that Inari seeks his life stone but fears Inugami’s wrath, admitting his dislike for Inari. Later, Kabane worries about Shiki, then remembers a promise to Kon. He finds her waiting with fish, and she excuses his lateness despite his admission of forgetting.

Shiki visits his childhood village and uncovers the dark truth about his parents' tragic fate.

Inugami, Kabane, Akira, and Shiki travel to the village where Shiki lived with his uncle before joining Inugami. There, they meet Shiki’s uncle, Akio, who recounts the story of Shiki’s parents. Shiki recalls childhood memories of marking trees and his mother’s daily forest visits, leading to a traumatic discovery of a ruined house. After being struck on the head, Shiki wakes in his uncle’s apartment, where Akio claims circumstances forced their separation. Nobimaru reveals that Akio Tademaru conducted horrific experiments using spider silk to weave human cells and organs. To fund a normal life for Shiki, Akio used Shiki’s mother as a base for artificial insemination with other Kemono, causing her physical and mental breakdown. Inugami confronts Akio, confirming he caused Shiki’s father’s death and suppressed the research to protect Kemono existence. Shiki, having fled years ago to escape this reality, is now brought to hear the full truth from his captured uncle.
