After rescuing a turtle, Urashima Tarou is invited to visit the underwater Ryūgū-jō. Upon his arrival, the princess Otohime treats him with open hostility. Instead of offering hospitality, she deliberately provides the lowest quality service possible. Her actions are calculated to drive Urashima insane. This treatment causes significant dismay for the protagonist, who expected a warm welcome. The narrative focuses on this stark contrast between his heroic deed and the cruel reception he receives from the palace ruler.
