Kogoro accepts a case from teen novelist Chu Masamura to investigate the recent car accident death of Taizo Yasuki. Masamura insists on identifying all of Yasuki's acquaintances, particularly those with questionable reputations. Kogoro first interviews Hiroki Kataoka, a new Haido City assembly member, who admits to being a distant high school classmate of Yasuki but refuses to provide further details, ending the interview abruptly. Kogoro then visits a bookstore, learning that Yasuki had stopped visiting to write his own novel. Returning to the starting point, Kogoro goes to Masamura's apartment. Upon entering, he discovers Masamura's dead body at the entrance. While Kogoro attempts to decipher cryptic notes in a notebook, he fails to notice the attacker behind him. The culprit sprays pepper particles into Kogoro's face and knocks him unconscious.
