Conan and Heiji deduce that the dog’s reaction to the Nue cry was key, noting its silence when the monster appeared. Kazuha and Ran retrieve requested items, uncovering a photo of an excavation team from sixteen years ago. The detectives plan to summon the Nue again to reveal the murderer’s tricks. Fumie Masuko is identified as the killer, motivated by her husband Charles’s death after he found a metal hairpin. Miscommunication over the word n-u-e led to the tragedy. Hajime Tsurumi is revealed to be Masuko’s son, though she denies it. Heiji takes Kazuha to Kurogane Lake, where the morning sun reveals the poem’s true meaning regarding the lake’s beauty. Just as he is about to confess, the Self Defense Force arrives to capture the Nue. Ooka Momiji makes her first appearance at the end.
