In 2138, virtual reality gaming is widespread. A popular online game called Yggdrasil is suddenly closed one day. The main character, Momonga, chooses not to log out and is transformed into a skeletal figure representing "the most powerful wizard." The game world evolves, with NPCs beginning to experience emotions. Momonga, who lacks family, friends, or a place in the real world, seeks to dominate the new reality that has emerged from the game.
