Jessie finds a staff and mask in ancient ruins that grant control over Pokémon. Team Rocket steals Ash's Pikachu but learns the items only function within the village boundaries. Brock sends Golbat to pursue the villains. During the chase, Golbat evolves into Crobat. Crobat defeats Team Rocket and helps recover the stolen staff and mask.
