Alone in the attic while Becky stays at Ashfield, Sara wakes and feeds sparrows, noticing many children next door and hoping to play. Sara receives a letter from Becky, and Cesar learns the neighboring house is being renovated. Later, returning from Covent Garden, Sara observes the Indian lascar Ram Dass unloading his master, Thomas Carrisford, from a carriage.
