At the end of the workday, Lavinia, accompanied by Jessie and Gertrude, asks Sara and Becky to translate her letters home into French. Becky assists, but the task delays Sara, making it hard for her to reach her class on time. Sensei Dufarge notices Lavinia’s poor French skills and realizes she is deceiving them, yet he remains intimidated by her because the Headmistress has ordered him to retire. When Becky shares this news with Sara, she becomes deeply distraught, as Sensei Dufarge was a dear friend to her.
