Sara watches the neighboring attic and feeds sparrows before starting work. During a shopping trip in Covent Garden, she notices Thomas’s declining health and doubts the Headmistress will permit outdoor play despite available companions. Meanwhile, Becky returns early to the Seminary, where the Headmistress announces that food costs will be deducted from her salary. As Becky unpacks, a noise from her room prompts her to rush downstairs. There, Ram Dass’s pet monkey, Surya, has arrived at the Seminary, causing alarm and frightening Cesar with his unexpected presence.
