Ep. 1: Ilse's Notebook: Memoirs of a Scout Regiment Member

In the year 850, Hange pursues a Titan into the forest, only for it to retreat and bang its head against a tree. Levi and others arrive to kill the hostile Titan, revealing the decapitated body of Ilse Langnar from the 34th Recon Corps division inside the trunk. Her notebook details her squad's death and her subsequent encounter with a Titan that spoke human language, calling her Ymir. After Ilse tried to communicate, the Titan bit off her head but did not devour her body, instead placing her remains in the tree. Hange reads the notes and uses them to persuade Erwin to approve operations for capturing Titans alive for study. She then returns Ilse's belongings to her grieving family.
