On New Year's Eve in 1921, Tamahiko lies in bed at his family's country villa in the mountains of Chiba, feeling depressed about his circumstances. During the night, Yuzuki Tachibana arrives at the residence. She announces that she is now betrothed to Tamahiko because her family owes a debt to the Shima family. This engagement is the result of the financial obligation her family has to the Shima family, forcing the union to take place at the villa.
