Ep. 79: Fujiko Battles Obayashi and Faces Heartbreak After Losing the Match
Aired on August 5, 1991

79
Fujiko fights southpaw Obayashi, trailing on points after a yuko penalty while the crowd supports her. Despite Jigoro’s faith and her parents’ doubts about her history of never placing first, she attempts a comeback ippon that is ruled out of bounds. Obayashi secures a late yuko, leading judges to award him the victory. Consequently, Fujiko gains acceptance to Saikai but misses the world championships in Yugoslavia. During the post-match celebration, Hanazono mistakenly kisses Shinnosuke while drunk. Yawara offers companionship, but Fujiko declines and returns home alone. She cries bitterly while staring at her judo uniform, leaving Yawara unable to reach her from outside the door.
