As the Japanese judo team leaves for Yugoslavia, companies display banners at the airport. Officials struggle to select a free weight representative since Yawara cannot compete in both the under 48kg and free divisions. Jigoro suggests Fujiko as an alternative, though she feels intimidated by competitors like Teleshikova and prefers ballet. Fujiko and Jody bond over their partners. Matsuda rushes home after his father suffers a stroke. Kuniko lies to Yawara, claiming Matsuda is bored, which distresses her. Tohdoh faces Cuba’s Martinez, whose intensity frightens Fujiko. Jigoro asks Fujiko to mentally practice “un deux trois” during matches. Ultimately, Martinez defeats Tohdoh in their bout.
