Mycroft warns Holmes about women and reveals his control over the British government. He orders Albert Moriarty, a lieutenant colonel linked to William, to steal secret papers from Irene Adler and kill her. Holmes and Watson meet King Wilhelm of Bohemia, who pays £1000 to retrieve a compromising photograph Adler holds. The king is revealed to be Adler in disguise. Holmes infiltrates her home, but Adler anticipates him, burns the house, and hides the photo. She announces she will live with Holmes, impressing William with her public association. Holmes is surprised when Adler risks herself to save a young girl from bullies. Later, Adler finds a letter hidden inside her jacket.
