Albert organizes a masquerade ball based on rumors of a Lord of Crime, inviting Adler to negotiate for documents. He reveals that Baron Ronald Rollinson burned a theatre for insurance money, leading to Rollinson's sudden death by poison. Adler realizes Albert's connection to the Lord of Crime, who seeks to change society. After Adler's home explodes, she returns to Sherlock and Watson, who claim a bomber targeted her to trick her into retrieving the documents. They reveal the British government secretly started the French Revolution. Albert shares this with William, who demands the documents. Adler explains she stole them to blackmail the monarchy to change society. Sherlock gives the documents to Adler to return to the government, while revealing to Watson that he deduced Adler plans to give them to the Lord of Crime to finally learn his identity.
