Thirty-five years prior to Shin's encounter with Merlin, the Earlshide School was home to Merlin, a difficult student, and Melinda, an exceptionally talented girl. Kyle, a gifted and unfeeling student, attended college during this time. Merlin and Melinda's romantic relationship became widely known in the city. Kyle, upon learning of it, expressed congratulations but was secretly consumed by envy. Following their graduation, Merlin and Melinda pursued careers as hunters, while Kyle chose the path of a magician.
